PLATINUM 24/7 LOCKSMITH · COMMERCIAL ACCESS PLANNING
Master Key System Planning & Installation in Boston, MA
A master key system should reflect how a property actually works: who needs access, which doors need restrictions and what happens when employees or tenants change.
Platinum 24/7 Locksmith provides mobile commercial locksmith assistance in Greater Boston. We can discuss the keying needs of offices, managed properties and businesses and confirm whether the intended master key work is supported for the existing hardware. A master key plan should be authorized by the property controller before any locks are changed.
Mobile service inquiries in Boston and nearby Massachusetts communities. Safe or lock model support and technician availability are confirmed for each request. Identification and permission to authorize the work may be required.
What is a master key system?
A master key system is a planned arrangement of compatible locks where some keys open only particular doors and a master key opens a defined group. It is not a special key that opens every kind of lock; the locks must be keyed and organized for that access structure.
For example, each tenant may have a key to one authorized door while a property manager may need access to selected common or maintenance areas. The correct access plan differs for small offices, mixed-use buildings and properties with separately controlled units.
Plan access levels before choosing cylinders
Start by listing entrances, interior rooms, storerooms, maintenance closets and other areas that need controlled access. For each door, record which roles should open it, who may authorize changes and whether the door is leased or shared.
A basic system may use individual change keys plus a master key. More complex arrangements may use multiple groups. Adding too many levels or sharing master keys too broadly can weaken practical key control. Keep the design as simple as the property allows.
Have a plan for lost keys, staff departures, new tenants and future expansion. Those events affect spare-key tracking and whether existing cylinders can be rekeyed while preserving the master structure.
Hardware compatibility matters
Not every brand, cylinder keyway or lock type can join the same master key arrangement. Mortise cylinders, cylindrical lever locks, deadbolts and restricted-key hardware may require different parts or replacement hardware.
Before any commitment, gather the hardware manufacturer and photographs of both sides of the doors and their edges. Confirm the function of each opening, such as storeroom, classroom, office, passage or exterior entry.
Do not modify the intended operation of required exit devices or fire-rated doors simply to create matching keys. Building egress, accessibility and applicable fire-safety requirements remain more important than convenience.
Master keying versus keyed alike versus access control
Keyed-alike locks use the same ordinary key across compatible doors; there is not necessarily any restricted access hierarchy. A master-keyed arrangement can allow individual keys to open limited doors while a separate authorized master key opens a defined group.
Electronic card readers and keypad systems manage credentials differently. A master key system does not replace an electronic access policy or ensure an electronic reader can be integrated with mechanical cylinders.
Choose based on what you need to control: a handful of compatible office doors may not require a complex master hierarchy. The best plan is the least complicated one that satisfies legitimate access requirements.
Prepare a useful request for your business
Give the property address, authorized representative, number of doors, existing keys and hardware types. Tell the team whether a current master-key plan exists, which keys must still work, and whether tenant or landlord approval is needed.
Ask about key duplication policy, recording who receives master keys, future changes, maintenance expectations and what documentation can be supplied for the work. Do not publish or email a sensitive full access matrix to a public form.
Pricing and compatibility depend on the number of cylinders, their condition, the access plan and any necessary hardware changes. A technician must confirm the supported scope before providing a job-specific quote.
