Why Won’t My Front Door Key Turn? A Boston Homeowner Guide

Five checks that can help separate a worn key, a cylinder problem and door misalignment.

Published October 27, 2026

A key that suddenly becomes hard to turn is frustrating, but replacing the entire lock is not always the right first step. The same symptom can come from the key, the cylinder, the latch or pressure from a door that has shifted in its frame. Knowing when the problem appears can help a locksmith assess the next step.

1. Does the key work while the door is open?

If the lock operates normally when the door is open but binds when the door is closed, pay attention to the door and strike alignment. The latch or deadbolt may be hitting the edge of its receiving hole.

Weather and seasonal movement can also change how a wood door fits. Do not force the thumbturn or key against pressure; damaging the key or lock can make the situation more complicated.

2. Check whether it is the key or one cylinder

Compare the behavior of another authorized key, if you have one. A worn or poorly copied key may turn less reliably than a correctly cut original. Never bend or file a key to force a fit.

If several valid keys bind in the same cylinder, a cylinder or hardware issue becomes more likely. A snapped key or one that will not withdraw requires a different repair approach.

3. Does the latch move fully?

If a deadbolt starts moving but does not travel completely into the strike, note whether the door has to be lifted, pushed or pulled to engage. This is useful diagnostic information.

A handle that does not retract the spring latch might have a separate issue from the keyed cylinder. These symptoms should be described separately when calling.

4. Avoid common mistakes

Do not use household oil, glue or excessive force inside the keyway. If the manufacturer’s care guidance calls for specific lubrication, follow that guidance rather than improvising.

If you are locked out, do not dismantle a lock while the door is shut. Property authorization is required for locksmith service.

5. When a professional evaluation helps

Call if the key is stuck, turning requires significant force, multiple keys fail or the lock fails to secure the door. A technician can determine whether the work falls within rekeying, cylinder service, lock replacement or door-alignment repair.

Have a picture of the lock and the door edge if it is safe to capture. State whether the problem happens with the door open, closed, or both.

Frequently asked questions

Should I just replace the whole lock?

Not necessarily. A worn key or misaligned strike can mimic a failing lock. Diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary replacement.

Why is the key difficult to turn only at night?

Changes in temperature, humidity or door position may affect alignment. Record when it happens, without forcing the lock.

Can rekeying solve a stuck key?

Rekeying changes key combinations. If the underlying problem is mechanical wear or misalignment, rekeying alone may not resolve it.
